Comment : Erforsche mich, Gott, und erfahre
mein Herze (Examine me, God, and learn of my heart) / / Cantata 136 / / Eighth
Sunday after Trinity / Epistle: Romans viii. 12-17 (We are joint heirs of
Christ) / Gospel: Matthew vii. 15-23 (Beware of false prophets) / / SIMON
CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 2 / / The high points of this cantata are at the
beginning and at the end. The opening is a delightfully attractive choral fugue
on a pleasantly meandering theme and the close is an especially attractive
setting of a very beautiful chorale melody (Auf meinen lieben Gott, the melody
set for verse six of Heermann's Wo soll ich fliehen hin) with the horn high up
in its register. In between these two pillars, the inspiration is not quite so
uniformly high. Following the opening chorus a recitative leads into the first
aria, for alto accompanied by oboe d'amore and continuo. The accompanying oboe
d'amore gets the best of it, the vocal line being somewhat dull. A further
recitative leads into duet for tenor and bass. Again, here the accompanying
violins are the most attractive feature of the movement, with a gently rocking
theme.

Comment : Lobe den Herrn, den mächtigen König
der Ehren (Praise the Lord, the mighty King of honours) / / Cantata 137 / /
Twelfth Sunday after Trinity / Epistle: 2 Corinthians iii. 4-11 (Ministers of a
new Covenant) / Gospel: Mark vii. 31-37 (The deaf man cured) / / SIMON CROUCH
SAYS: / Rating: 1 / / It is thought that this cantata as well as serving for
the Sunday service, was used at the inauguration of the new town council in
Leipzig which occurred a few days later. The festive use of trumpets and drums
certainly seems to support this hypothesis. Bach uses an older style of cantata
composition here, with the verses of the hymn unchanged (similar to BWV 4). /
/ The first verse is a fugal chorus with an exuberant introduction, the second a
solo aria where the alto sings a decorated form of the chorale melody whilst the
obbligato violin darts around. Bach later transcribed this movement as one of
the Schubler Chorales (BWV 650). The third movement sees soprano and bass
soloist competing to elaborate on the melody and the fourth gives a counter
melody to the tenor soloist whilst the trumpet holds the original melody. The
continuo group are on stimulants. Proceedings are rounded off in grand style by
everyone at full volume in the concluding chorale.

Comment : Warum betrubst du dich, mein Herz?
(Why are you troubled, my heart?) / / Cantata 138 / / Fifteenth Sunday after

Matthew vi. 23-34 (Avoid worldly cares) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 2+ /
/ Lovers of Wagner's Die Meistersinger will prick up their ears at the mention
of Hans Sachs. Here the real life Sachs provides the words of the hymn upon
which this chorale cantata is based. The first, third and seventh verses are
taken directly from a hymn of his and the remaining verses appear to be based on
related biblical passages. The opening chorus is a very melancholy and beautiful
setting of the hymn tune in which, towards the end, there is an interpolation of
soprano recitative. I'm afraid, to my ears this latter detracts from the
effectiveness of the movement. Recitative is followed by another fine chorale
setting with interpolated recitative (this time more natural) and a further
recitative leads into the very fine bass aria Auf Gott steht meine Zuversicht.
This is one of those many tremendous arias to be found in the cantatas that
really should be rescued from its relative obscurity and put into the regular
repertoire of the best singers. A lovely melody with show-stopping string
accompaniment, it would be quite happy standing on its own. A further recitative
leads into the closing chorale movement. Here the accompaniment is really quite
spectacular for a chorale setting: Sweeping runs from the violins give
expression to exuberant joy.

iii. 17-21 (Follow not carnal things, as many do) / Gospel: Matthew xxii. 15-22
(The Pharisees and the tribute to Caesar) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: / Rating: 2+ /
/ The opening chorus of the chorale cantata BWV 139 is to my ears a very
beautiful and genial piece and I would thoroughly recommend that you listen at
least to this movement if you listen to nothing else here. The rest of the
cantata follows the standard form of recitative, aria, recitative, aria,
recitative and final chorale. The first aria, for the tenor soloist, has a
fairly athletic violin accompaniment and scuttles along pleasantly. The second
aria, this time for the bass soloist, is perhaps more interesting, with several
sections and contrasting moods. In both of the arias a certain amount of
reconstruction for the solo instruments has to be done because the cantata has
only come down to us as a set of apparently incomplete parts. The cantata ends
with a straightforward chorale setting.

Comment : Cantata 140 / / Twenty Seventh
Sunday after Trinity / Epistle: 2 Corinthians v. 1-10 (Assurance of Salvation) /
Gospel Matthew xxv. 1-13 (Parable of the Wise Virgins) / / SIMON CROUCH SAYS: /
Rating: 1* / / The gospel for the day concerns the parable of the wise virgins,
portraying the second coming of Christ as if he were a bridegroom come to claim
his bride, the soul. Cantata BWV 140 is based around Nicolai's beautiful chorale
melody Wachet Auf and develops the analogy of Christ and the bridegroom to
portray the passionate love between Christ and the soul. / / Throughout the
cantata, Bach's tuneful invention is at it very best. The opening chorus may
remind listeners of the form of the opening chorus of the St. Matthew Passion:
Not one great tune, but two! A short recitative is followed by a duet
accompanied by a violin theme that also will evoke memories of the St. Matthew
Passion. Then the accompanied chorale that was later used in the Schubler
Chorales. Being brought up in the Anglican tradition as a choirboy, this is one
of those pieces that brings memories flooding back, of summer evenings in the
English countryside after choir rehearsals. A wonderful duet, with a delicious
oboe accompaniment pledges eternity between the lovers, now one flesh. The
cantata closes with the chorale melody as a Gloria. / / Cantata 140 is
deservedly recognised as one of Bach's best known and loved pieces and surely
stands among the greatest of his works.
